Most spots are harmless. But it’s worth knowing for sure.
The good news is that the majority of moles and skin spots turn out to be nothing to worry about. The tricky part is that you can’t always tell by looking, and Googling photos at 11pm rarely helps.
That’s where we come in. A skin cancer doctor with years of experience, and the right technology, can tell you what’s going on. If it’s nothing, you can stop worrying. If it needs attention, we’ll catch it early and explain your options clearly, without pressure.

When to get a spot checked.
Not sure if your mole needs checking?
It’s a good idea to book a check if you notice a spot that:
-
Is new, especially if you're an adult
-
Has changed in size, shape or colour
-
Looks different from your other moles (the "ugly duckling")
-
Itches, bleeds, crusts or doesn't heal
-
Has uneven edges or more than one colour
-
Is simply bothering you, even if you can't say why
You don't need a good reason. If you're worried, that's reason enough.
This list is a guide only and can’t replace an examination by a doctor.
What to expect at your visit:
We know it can feel daunting if you’ve never had a skin check. Here’s how it works:
01
A relaxed chat. We’ll ask about the spot you’re worried about, your skin and family history, and any past sun exposure or skin cancers. There’s no judgement.
02
A close look with dermoscopy. Using a dermatoscope, a special magnifying device, we examine your spot in detail, including structures beneath the surface that the eye can’t see.
03
Full body mapping if it’s right for you. Depending on your situation, we may recommend a full body skin check using FotoFinder (more on this below).
04
Clear answers. We’ll explain what we’ve found in everyday language and what we recommend, whether that’s reassurance, monitoring, or further testing.
You stay in control throughout. We’ll only examine what you’re comfortable with, and you’re welcome to ask us to pause or explain anything at any point.

FotoFinder full body skin check: a closer, smarter way to keep watch
Looking at a single mole tells us a lot. But watching how your skin changes over time tells us even more.
FotoFinder total body mapping combines high-resolution photographs of your whole body with detailed close-up dermoscopy images of individual spots. These images become a baseline we can compare at future visits, so new or changing moles are easier to identify.
What this means for you:
-
Earlier detection. Spotting a change sooner gives us the best chance of acting early.
-
Fewer unnecessary worries and procedures. With a record of how your moles looked before, we can often confirm that a spot is stable rather than removing it “just in case.”
-
A clearer picture, with the answers on screen. We can show you your own images and explain what we’re looking at.
-
Comfortable and non-invasive. It involves photography only. It’s quick and painless.
Full body skin checks with FotoFinder are especially helpful if you:
-
Have lots of moles
-
Have had a skin cancer before
-
Have a family history of melanoma or skin cancer
-
Have fair skin or a history of sunburn
-
Have a spot that’s new or changing
We’re always exploring technology that improves your experience and results, but the technology supports our judgement and never replaces it. Every image is reviewed by your doctor.

What if my spot needs treatment?
Hearing that a spot needs a closer look can be unsettling, so here’s how we’ll handle it.
-
We’ll explain first. You’ll know what we’re seeing and why, before anything happens.
-
Testing, if needed. If a spot looks suspicious, we may recommend a small skin biopsy, with the sample sent to a pathology lab.
-
Treatment options that suit you. Many skin cancers are very treatable, particularly when found early. Depending on the diagnosis, options may include medical (non-surgical) treatments or skin cancer surgery. We’ll explain the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed choice.
-
Follow-up and ongoing care. We’ll make sure you know what comes next and keep monitoring your skin as needed.
You’ll have the same experienced doctor from first check to treatment, so you’re not starting over with someone new.
